Opa was born in 1932, and grew up with his three sisters in Mangham, Louisiana. In high school, he was known as “Tricky Billy King” for his superb athletic abilities while playing quarterback for his high school football team. He went on to serve in the United States Navy, including a tour in Korean War, and ultimately achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer. After his service, he returned home to attend Northeast Louisiana State College and became the first ever recipient of a Physics degree from that school. This degree gave him opportunities to work on incredible projects for their time; including experiments in nuclear aircraft and advancements in space travel. Opa also had the opportunity to work around the world; including Germany where he met his wife Doris. They have two sons, Scott and Steve, and six grandchildren. For as incredible a life as he has lived, he has kept an easy-going lifestyle and magnetic sense of humor that bring joy to all those fortunate enough to meet him.
William Clara “Opa” King and his three sisters grew up in the small farm town of Mangham, Louisiana. Growing up, Opa and his sisters had to do a lot for themselves, like farm their own food and make their own clothes and blankets. This made them very handy and creative, and the King family would become revered in the region for their handmade wedding dresses and intricate quilts. However, one King family creation was kept close to the chest: their original seasoning blend.
As the story goes, the initial form of the recipe was discovered on the banks of the Mississippi River, then taken back to the King family farm. There, it was adapted and perfected through multiple iterations until finally becoming the savory, spicy, and slightly sweet seasoning that could improve almost every food it was put on.
Three generations later, the oldest son of the oldest son of Opa fell in love with the seasoning at a young age. He would bring the seasoning to school, camps, and any other place where the food might need a little something extra. Wherever he brought it, people would try it. They too would fall amazed by the careful balance of flavor Opa Salt has to offer.
